More about ‘The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award’ (The President’s Award)
At Alma Mater International School, we proudly offer The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, also known as “The President’s Award.” This globally recognised non-formal education framework operates in over 130 countries and territories, empowering young people to dream big, celebrate their achievements, and make a difference in the world. Open to all 14- to 24-year-olds, participants complete four sections at each level of the award: Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, and Adventurous Journey. At the Gold Level, participants also complete a residential project, providing a well-rounded and impactful experience.
Other Curricular Activities
Think Tank
The Think Tank program aims to equip students with the skills to apply their knowledge from different subjects. Through collaborative group projects, students merge subject content to solve real-world problems. Project groups are carefully curated to ensure diversity in skills, knowledge, and abilities, fostering a strong final product. Students engage in innovative projects, such as creating an educational board game for teenagers, where they develop a prototype and present a business plan as if they were seeking financing for their venture. Skills taught include identifying market gaps, target market identification, designing logos and slogans, creating game board parts, producing high-level instruction documents, and delivering professional presentations.
English Enrichment
English Enrichment is designed to enhance students’ potential to access the Cambridge curriculum. This engaging program provides students with the opportunity to improve their social skills, boost confidence, and deepen their understanding of the English language and literature. Through interactive activities and engaging discussions, high school students interact with English in a fun and meaningful way.
Film Study
Explore and analyze drama films.
Learn various cinematographic techniques.
Creative Writing
Students collaboratively and individually, explore the creative writing process by practising the elements of various writing styles, and performing self-written pieces as enrichment for their writing and storytelling abilities.
One Act Play Festival
In groups of 13, students create a production team to write, produce, and perform a 20-minute one act play.
Advanced Film Study
Literature and cinematographic techniques. Exploring and analysing films and literature for example, Shakespeare’s remake of “The Tempest” and “V for Vendetta”.
Research Essentials
Research Essentials focuses on teaching students the necessary skills for academic resilience. This program takes a three-pronged approach, covering study skills, transferable (soft) skills, and research skills. Students learn essential study skills such as time management, goal setting, note-taking, and critical analysis. They also develop transferable skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Research skills are honed through understanding text structures, conducting literature reviews, and writing research reports with a focus on argumentation and metacognition.
